It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new life for me…

It's a new dawnSo 2016 has arrived, and it certainly is a new dawn for me. Taking leave from Brisbane Catholic Education, which has been my employer for the past eighteen years, I have taken a leap of faith, and have enrolled to be a full time doctoral student, completing (hopefully!) the Doctor of Education course through Queensland University of Technology.

Almost all of my previous studies have been part time while working full time, and so I am very excited about the idea of actually having time to read and reflect, write and think; rather than squishing it all into evenings and weekends, when I would be wishing I was elsewhere…

And so this site will become my virtual home, where I hope to share my learning, my ponderings and my discoveries. I have blogged quite a bit before; you may have read my work on the ResourceLink blog, or the predecessor to this blog, Linking Learning mark 1. Those blogs focused on new technologies, and ways to embed ICT into education and librarianship. While these themes will continue in this blog I am sure, I will also here be sharing my focus on Connected Learning and Social Media in Education, as well as the value of a PLN for educators – as this will form the crux of my thesis over the next three years.

It’s funny how people react when you tell them you are leaving work to commence full time study (at the ripe old age of 40!). Some can hardly disguise their envy, at the fortune I have being able to spend so much time on myself (and I am utterly in debt to my family for being willing to take on the sacrifices relinquishing a whole fulltime wage will no doubt necessitate). Others look at me as if I am crazy – ‘stay at home and study? why on earth would you put yourself through that??’ they ask. Well, I guess only time will give me that answer, but right now, all I can say is that it is simply because I love learning, and I want to spend the rest of my career teaching and learning and challenging myself; and to do so, this is what I must do!

So amid the blog posts listing 30 ways to change your life, 15 ways to make resolutions stick and 10 ways to make your goals for 2016 a reality, I am adding mine: it’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, and it really is a new life for me…and I’m feeling good!!
